It is easier said than done, since, to achieve this huge goal, you must have abundant time at your disposal, sufficient resources and most importantly, commitment.
Breeding Process
Breeding process of Betta is similar to that of many other fish.
- The first step in the breeding process is setting up a fish tank which should be fixed. These fish are territorial and always keep a vigil on their territory, so you must set up two separate tanks for male and female of the species, else they will end up injuring each other in a contest to defend their region. Be sure to fill both tanks before releasing any fish in it.
- Once you are ready with their home, get a breeding pair. If you want a fast and good breeding, you should stress on obtaining a young Betta pair, which should not older than fourteen months of age, as this is the most reproductive period of their life.
- Avoid purchasing this breeding pair from pet stores, since they could be too old to breed and their genetic history could not be traced down. Knowledge of genetic background is very essential, if you aim to run a pet fish business, else you will end up with a sick and unattractive progeny of this Betta pair. Both fish of the breeding pair should be of the same size. The male Betta are more colorful in comparison to its female partner. You have to place the male and female in separate tanks for their own safety.

Tank setup for breeding
Once the pair is adjusted to the new habitat, you can now start the process of setting up the breeding tank. Its capacity should be from five to ten gallons, fitted with an adjustable filter and a heater to set temperature to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Add a removable divider and plenty of plants.
However, avoid putting gravel or similar substrate, because the eggs can get lost in the small gaps. Do not put plastic plants, which could be very damaging to their delicate fins. Water level must be maintained at six inches from surface.
Breeding season
As the breeding period approaches, start conditioning them by feeding live food and changing the water regularly. Healthy and happy fish result in a successful breeding. The young ones called fry, feed on live food, so have a supply of very small live insects, ready, before the eggs are hatched and the brood fills the breeding tank.
Two tanks must be placed next to each other, so that the male and female can see each other and get prepared for breeding. You must keep an eye on female, to observe her swollen belly and appearance of vertical stripes on her body, when she is ready to spawn.
Once the female betta is ready, both of them must be kept in the breeding tank and again be observant for an aggressive male Betta. If the male is too hostile, take out the female and wait for a couple of days before trying again.
Normal behavior is that the male swims around, showing off his fins, flaring and generally boasting of his masculinity. The male may bully her slightly and appears to snap at her fins. As long as this looks harmless, you must not interfere. This courtship period may last several hours or even days. Let it be and have patience.
The male betta will soon start building a bubble nest and will attract the female to this nest to copulate. The female will look paralyzed as she releases the white eggs and once she is done, you must remove her, because she may consume the eggs.
The male will collect the eggs one by one and secure them in the nest. Leave the male, in the tank for three days to take care of the fry. Once the fry swims on its own, take out the male Betta from the tank and place it back to his own tank.
Taking care of Betta eggs
Both fish will sustain injuries during the courtship period and will be susceptible to infection. Treat the breeding tank with MarOxy or some other similar treatment, which will reduce the chances of fungi attack on the eggs. Wrap the tank with glass or plastic sheet to prevent from cool air. Otherwise, the fry may develop pneumonia, when they swim up to the surface.

In their natural habitat, Betta feed on mosquitos and worms that carry blood. For the pet Betta, pellets also known as betta pellets, commercial fish foods or frozen worms can also be used as feed.
