If you'd like to add an easy-care fish to your home, the colorful betta fish is a good choice. Caring for bettas is relatively easy, and doesn't require much in the way of prior fish-keeping experience. Take good care of your betta, and he might share your life for two to three years.
Bowl or Tank
While small bowls are sold in pet stores for betta-keeping, providing at least a 10 gallon tank -- complete with heater -- for your betta is a healthier environment and probably will add to his life span. Keep the tank temperature between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and the pH level between 6.8 and 7.4. A few live plants in the tank, such as java fern, provide an area for your betta to hang out.
No Betta Companions
While you can keep betta fish in a tank with other, compatible species, that doesn't include other bettas. There's a reason they are also known as Siamese fighting fish. Put two males in a tank, and one of them will kill the other. Females aren't safe, either. When a male isn't interested in breeding, he might do in a female betta. You do need fish experience when breeding bettas, because putting the male and female together at the wrong time can lead to disaster.
You can place bettas in a community tank with nonaggressive fish of the same size. For best results, don't put bettas in tanks with very colorful fish, or those with large fins, such as angelfish. Bettas are more likely to attack them.
Feeding Betta Fish
If you purchase a container of betta food when you purchase your fish, that's likely to last him the rest of his life. Generally, two to three pellets twice daily is sufficient for a betta, but soak them in a jar of water for about 10 minutes prior to feeding. However, bettas need more than commercial pellets to thrive. For some meals, feed your betta bloodworms or brine shrimp in lieu of pellets. Three per feeding, similar to pellets, is adequate. Avoid overfeeding your betta. If he begins bloating, that's a sign he's receiving too much food.
