History of Bettas
Also known as Siamese fighting fish, the betta is a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. They live in rice paddies and shallow streams, feasting on insect larvae. In the mid 1800s, betta fish fighting tournaments were popular among the wealthy in Siam (now Thailand).
Male bettas are extremely aggressive and will fight to the death if trapped in a small space with another male betta! Their aggressive nature when threatened, but their calm and beautiful demeanor when alone made the bettas a highly desired pet.
Earlier breeds of bettas were not nearly as colorful as we know them today and betta fish care was not as sophisticated. Most betta fish exhibited dull colors of green, black and red with varying fin lengths. In 1840, the King of Siam sent his prized fighting fish to Dr. Theodor Cantor for breeding and examination.
After breeding millions of breeding trials, the first bright and longfin betta splendens (scientific name established in 1909) finally arrived in the United States in 1927.
Because of the varying colors and fin lengths, breeding soon took up roots in the United States. In the 1950s, Warren Young bred an exciting variety that comprises most of the betta fish for sale in the U.S.--the Libby betta. Named after his wife, the Libby betta exhibits fins that are the exact length of the body. This variety is widely known as a veil tale betta, for its long flowing fins.
Breeding bettas for the perfect coloration and shape is still in full force today. The most recent development was the half-moon betta in the early 1990s. This betta has a tale in the shape of a half moon and is usually larger than the bettas body!
Breeding and keeping bettas as pets is extremely popular all over the world, although most people do not know good betta fish care. There is even an organization dedicated to the breeding, raising and study of bettas known as the International Betta Congress.
